Happy Birthday, Linux! The open-source operating system is turning 30 this year. While it’s hard to name an exact birthday for the project (depending on whether you consider the first official “press” announcement, the release of the first version, etc., you will end up with a variety of dates), we took this as an occasion to have a look at some numbers behind the development of the Linux kernel. For a variety of reasons reaching from cost-saving measures to special requirements for own software, a lot of corporations not only profit from but also actively take part in the development process. Amongst them, some of the world’s leading tech companies, such as Intel, Microsoft and Google. This chart showcases the share of the biggest corporate contributors to the Linux kernel by the number of commits to the Linux kernel codebase.
