On 11 March 2021, a JPG file was sold for almost $70 million in an online auction by Christie’s. It was made by Mike Winkelmann, a digital artist known as Beeple.
“Everydays: The First 5000 Days” — the first virtual Non-Fungible Token (NFT) artwork to be sold at a major auction house closed at $69,346,250 during an online auction.
Not only was the price a new high for a digital artwork. The result was the third-highest auction price achieved for a living artist, after Jeff Koons and David Hockney.
To bring things into perspective we’ve compared the realised price of Beeple’s artwork with the price of the 100 most expensive paintings ever sold.
